Cadet Organization and Chain of Command

 

C/LTC Cayla Barrientos is current Battalion commander for the school year 2006-2007. The Battalion commander is responsible for the training, administration, discipline, moral, esprit de corps, and performance of the cadet Battalion. The Battalion commander also sets the example for the Battalion in appearance, attitude, conduct, bearing, and tact. C/LTC Cayla Barrientos has been accepted to the Education College at Texas Tech University. She plans to double major in elementary education, and visual arts. After college, she not only plans on becoming a general elementary teacher, but also hopes to have her own art studio.

C/MAJ Shanna McGee is the current Battalion executive officer for the 2006-2007 school years. The Battalion is responsible for maintaining an efficient staff, as well as commanding the Battalion in the absence of the Battalion commander. The executive officer is also responsible for briefing the cadet and staff officers. As a senior, C/MAJ Shanna McGee will be attending Texas A and M Corpus Christi for the fall session of 2007. She plans to major in biology. After college she plans on continuing her research or become a professor of undergraduate biology.

C/SGM Nicole Gonzales is the current Battalion Sergeant Major for the school year 2006-2007. The SGM is the Senior Cadet non-commissioned officer in the battalion. She is the Battalion adviser concerning enlisted NCO cadets in the Battalion, and makes recommendations concerning promotions/reductions/awards and/or problem areas encountered. She also organizes Color Guards for community and school purposes. Her job is also to encourage cadets to volunteer for school functions such as honor guards, mentoring, community service, and escorting for formal events. C/SGM Nicole Gonzales plans to attend Texas Tech School of Education. She would like to major in elementary education, and after college hopes to become a kindergarten teacher.

C/PFC Anthony Barrientos is the S-1 for school year 2006-2007. The S-1's job is to manage cadet personnel records, promotion, demotions, and awards. C/PFC Barrientos hopes to attend the Corps of Cadet at WestPoint Military Academy, where he will major in Physics and Chemistry. After college he plans to join the United States Army Special Forces. Assistant C/PVT David Zavala helps manage JUMS and fills in the position of the absence of the primary S-1. As a senior C/PVT Zavala has been accepted to Angelo State University where he will major in Military Science. After graduation he plans to join the United States Air Force Communication, Network, Switching and Crypto Systems.
   


C/SFC Celestino Leija is the current S-2 for the School year 2006-2007. The S-2 job is to maintain the JROTC scrap book, bulletin boards, year in review video, and interface with the community media. C/SFC Leija plans to attend Texas Tech University, where he will major in architectural design. After college he plans to use his major by starting an architectural design firm. As the assistant, C/SSG Cassandra Lopez helps the S-2 maintain all his duties, as well as filling in for his absence. C/SSG Lopez plans to attend Texas Tech University and major in education. She plans to become an elementary teacher after college.
   

C/SGT Maria Flores is the S-3 for school year 2006-2007. The S-3's job is to maintain the calendar, coordinate drill meets, Battalion activities and other extracurricular activities. C/SGT Flores is an upcoming junior. After graduating, her plans include attending Harvard University, where she will major in law and military science, with a minor in equine science. After college she dreams of becoming Chief Justice of the United States. She is currently searching the ranks of the Battalion for an assistant to help with her duties.

C/2LT Lynnsi Adams is the S-4 for the school year 2006-2007. The S-4's job includes maintaining the arms room, rifle range, cadet uniforms, and the Battalion inventory. Senior C/2LT Lynnsi Adams plans to enlist in the Air-Force as an S.P. (Security Police). She plans to enter the K-9 Academy to receive her certification in dog handling. After the Military, Cadet Adams dreams of becoming a falconer. Junior C/PFC Devin Hargrove is the Assistant S-4. Cadet Hargrove is training to succeed the current supply officer next year. Devin's plans for the future are to enlist in the United States Army and to retire as a senior officer.
    
   

2-1. CADET CORPS ORGANIZATION.

a. The Corps of Cadets will be organized on the lines of an Infantry Battalion consisting of a Battalion Headquarters and four rifle companies. (See Appendix A, Organizational Chart.)

b. Each class period will be organized as a rifle company consisting of a company headquarters and two rifle platoons.

c. Each platoon will be organized with a platoon headquarters and a minimum of two rifle squads. When enrollment in a given class period permits, each squad will consist of two fire teams.

d. The Battalion will be integrated throughout with male and female cadets of any race with out discrimination to rank or position held.

2-2. CHAIN OF COMMAND.

a. Chain of Command is defined as "the succession of commander from superior to subordinate through which control is exercised".

b. For the purpose of this JROTC Unit, the Army chain of command is , in order of superior to subordinate:

Commander, Cadet Command

c. The cadet chain of command is, in order of superior to subordinate:

Battalion Commander (Lieutenant Colonel)
Company Commander (Captain)
Platoon Leader (1LT or 2LT)
Squad Leader (Staff Sergeant)
Assistant Squad Leader (Sergeant)
Fire Team Leader (Corporal, Private First Class, Private or Cadet, if so organized)

2-3. RESPONSIBILITIES OF CADET POSITIONS.

a. The battalion staff and company commanders will meet once a week as determined by the Battalion Commander and at other times as deemed appropriate by the SAI.

b. Duties of Staff Members:

(1) Battalion Commander.

(a) Makes decisions in conjunction with the operation of the battalion.

(b) Designates particular areas of inspection and/or supervision by members of the staff, and requires necessary reports.

(c) Inspects and evaluates work of staff officers.

(d) Presides over all officer calls.

(e) Responsible for the conduct of disciplinary and reduction boards.

(f) Responsible to the SAI to ensure that all orders given to him/her requiring the attention of a member of the command is disseminated without delay.

(g) Work with the SAI and school authorities in coordinating without delay.

(2) Battalion Executive Officer.

(a) Assumes command of the battalion in the absence of the battalion commander.

(b) Serves as the advisor to the battalion commander in formulating policy and plans for the battalion.

(c) Monitors and coordinates the work of the battalion staff during designated periods.

(d) Inspects the work of the battalion staff and makes other inspections as directed by the battalion commander.

(e) Assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by the battalion commander.

(3) S-1 (Adjutant).

(a) Responsible for designated records and reports.

(b) Maintains cadet personnel folders.

(c) Publishes all battalion orders pertaining to the cadet corps.

(4) S-2 (Public Relations and Public Information).

(a) Keeps bulletin boards posted in current, local, and world events.

(b) Designates person in each company to assist in keeping company informed of news events and to report news interest items pertaining to members of the company.

(c) Works with school Publications teacher, the School District Public Information Offices, local newspapers, radio and TV stations for the publishing of news items pertaining to the ROTC program.

(d) Works with the Battalion Commander and the SAI in formulating the Public Relations and Recruiting Program.

(e) Develops the Year-in-Review Video and the Senior DVD Disk.

(5) S-3 (Operations and Training).

(a) Maintains training reference file and reference library.

(b) Maintains Cadet Training Records.

(c) Under supervision of the SAI, publishes and posts weekly training schedules.

(d) Prepares and maintains parade field marking equipment and marks field for reviews and ceremonies.

(6) S-4 (Supply).

(a) Responsible for the maintenance of the classrooms, rifle range and arms room.

(b) Inspects to ensure the proper cleaning of weapons and other JROTC equipment.

(c) Assumes such responsibilities as may be assigned him/her by the Military Property Custodian and works under supervision of the MPC.

(7) Command Sergeant Major. This position designates the Senior Cadet noncommissioned officer of the cadet corps. In keeping with the trust, confidence, responsibility, and authority bestowed upon the position, his/her duties are to:

(a) Assist the Battalion Commander and the Adjutant as directed.

(b) Advise and assist all First Sergeants.

(c) Trains, supervises and coordinates the Honor Guards/Color Guards.

(d) Coordinate and ensure that company flag details function properly.

c. Duties of Company Members.

(1) Company Commander.

(a) Responsible for the training, discipline, and appearance of his/her company.

(b) Checks the training schedules daily and announces the next day's requirements.

(c) Ensures that all officers and NCOs are thoroughly familiar with the contents of the Field Manual (FM) 3-21.5, Drill and Ceremonies.

(d) Conducts uniform inspections of cadets in rank.

(e) Makes timely recommendations for promotions to ensure that company leadership vacancies are promptly filled.

(f) Reports to the Battalion Commander without undue delay, disciplinary and leadership problems he/she is unable to handle. In the event a problem must be handled immediately, he/she will report it to the SAI or instructor in charge of the class.

(g) Utilizes the "The Chain of Command" to the utmost issuing orders, making corrections, etc.

(2) Company Executive Officer.

(a) Assumes command of the company in the absence of the Company Commander.

(b) Supervises company administrative details, and trains the company guidon bearer.

(c) Assumes such responsibilities as the Company Commander assigns.

(3) First Sergeant. This is the top enlisted grade in the company and as a noncommissioned officer position is second only to the Sergeant Major in rank, importance, responsibility and prestige. The First Sergeant's primary responsibility is as senior enlisted assistant to the Company Commander. The duties of the First Sergeant are:

(a) Assists the Company Commander as directed.

(b) Takes the report at all company formations, and prepares absentee record (slips), under the supervision of the class instructor when the company forms as a unit.

(c) Conducts routine company administration.

(d) Prepares company orders and reports for the company commander's signature.

(4) Guidon Bearer.

(a) Responsible for proper and efficient handling of the company guidon in accordance with FM 3-21.5 during company drill and at other times when required.

(b) Perform such duties under the supervision of the First Sergeant as may be directed by the Company Commander.

d. Duties of Platoon Members.

(1) Platoon Leader.

(a) Responsible for the training, discipline, and appearance of his/her platoon.

(b) Makes timely recommendations for promotions to ensure that platoon leadership vacancies are promptly filled.

(2) Platoon Sergeant.

(a) Assumes command of the platoon in the absence of the Platoon Leader.

(b) Assist and advises the Platoon Leader in the training of the platoon, and performs such other duties as may be assigned by the Platoon Leader.

(3) Squad Leader.

(a) Responsible for the training, discipline, and appearance of his/her squad.

(b) Know the names of each squad member.

(c) Makes accurate report, by name, of absentees at all formations.

(4) Fire Team Leader/ Assistant Squad Leader.

(a) Know the duties of the squad Leader and be prepared to assume command of the squad in his/her absence.

(b) Assist the Squad Leader and perform such duties as may be directed by him/her.

(c) Know the names of each squad member.

(5) Individual Squad Members.

(a) Receive and be responsive to all instructions and orders of the cadet officers and noncommissioned officers.

(b) Conduct himself/herself in such a manner as to bring credit to the individual, the Corps of Cadets, and to the school at all times.
