8-1. GENERAL. Participation in one of the Matador Battalion's competition teams is a special privilege. These teams represent our school and the U.S. Army in a variety of locations and situations. They require hours of practice to achieve the precision necessary to successfully compete with other teams. To achieve such results, each participant must be highly motivated and dedicated.
8-2. CONTRACT. Because of the representative nature of the competition teams all cadets wishing to join must sign a contract indicating their full commitment to the team program. The cadet's parents/guardians must also sign the contract indicating their support of the cadet's endeavors. (See Appendix D, EHS JROTC Team Contract.)
8-3. LETTERS. Cadets may letter in any of the AJROTC Competition Teams. The letter is a standard ESTACADO "E" with the letters AJROTC woven vertically along the spine of the letter. The insert(s) of the team(s) on which the cadet has qualified may be included on the letter, as well as a "stripe" for each year of participation.
8-4. QUALIFICATION. In order to qualify for a letter, a cadet must have attended ninety percent of all scheduled practices and participated in eighty percent of the drill meets. Removal from a team for disciplinary reasons is grounds for loosing the privilege of wearing the AJROTC letter.
8-5 PARTICIPATION. Cadets may participate in a total of two teams of a different nature (i.e. one color guard and one drill team). This policy exists to maximize the number of cadets able to participate and minimize the loss caused by the sickness/disqualification of a given cadet. The only exception is the physical training team which may have members who are already members of two other teams.
8-6. CHALLENGE. Any cadet, especially designated alternates, may challenge a primary team member for their position. In the case of a challenge, a "March Off" using a regular drill meet sequence will be conducted to determine the best performer. The sequence will be provided well in advance of the "March Off" and will be graded by a panel of four, of which three members will be from other teams. The challenging cadet must meet the standard grade point and practice requirements.
8-7. READINESS. Team captains are responsible for the readiness of their teams. They will ensure adequate alternates are trained to cover contingency and continuity purposes
8-8. DRILL MEETS.
a. The battalion goal is six drill meets annually, divided equally between semesters. Maximum participation will be allowed on day trips in order to increase cadet exposure and interest. Because of the significantly higher costs involved, only primary team members and first alternates will travel on overnight trips.
b. The battalion will not go on overnight trips with ad hoc teams or less than two teams. Participating team members must have practiced regularly and be fully ready and qualified to participate.
c. UIL rules apply. Cadets must be academically qualified. A grace period of one week is allowed at the end of the grading period in which a cadet may have become disqualified. Therefore, a cadet may not participate during the grace period immediately after a grading period in which the cadet has requalified.
d. Alternates and team members not immediately waiting their turn in competition will assist the team preparing to participate. Cadets will assist in uniform preparation and wear, handling of equipment, movement to the competition area and support of the team while competing.
e. A list of planned drill meets will be posted in each classroom by the battalion S-3 to encourage participation and assist individual cadet planning.
8-9. COLOR GUARD (letter insert: Crossed Flags).
a. Three competition Color Guards will be maintained whenever possible. There will be one each in the Female, Male, and Mixed categories. Drill meet participation will often be limited to two teams selected by a "March Off" prior to the meet. The loosing team, if properly practiced and academically qualified, will travel to the meet as the alternate.
b. The competition Color Guards are responsible for the manning and fielding of Color Guards at Lowery Field and elsewhere throughout the year. A wide cross section of cadets should be encouraged to participate in these non-competitive events. All cadets performing in Color Guards will receive the appropriate ribbon.
c. Color Guard Ropes (white) are reserved as special recognition for:
(1) members of competition teams after participation in three competitions.
(2) cadets who have participated in three or more Lowery Field Color Guards.
8-10. DRILL TEAM (letter insert: Armed Drill Team-Crossed Rifles; Unarmed Drill Team-Boot w/o tassel).
a. Two competition Drill Teams will be maintained whenever possible. There will be one armed and one unarmed team. The membership goal for each team is a minimum of nine members plus the commander.
b. The Drill Teams are responsible for the manning and fielding of the Honor Guard at Lowery Field. A wide cross section of cadets should be encouraged to participate in this activity. They will receive the appropriate ribbon (flag detail) for participation in six events.
c. Drill Team Ropes (Cardinal) are awarded as special recognition to members of the competition teams after participation in three competitions.
8-11. PHYSICAL TRAINING TEAM (letter insert: Winged Foot).
Two competition teams, one female and one male, will be maintained whenever possible. The membership goal for each team is a minimum of five cadets.
8-12. MARKSMAN SHIP TEAM (letter insert: Lone Rifle).
8-13. ACADEMIC TEAM (letter insert: Lamp of Learning).
8-14. DRILL MEET DRESS.
Cadet attire for drill meets must meet LISD standards. Estacado blue JROTC "T" shirts will be worn for single day meets or for the travel day of two day meets. Army black JROTC "T" shirt will be worn on the meet day of two day trips. Uniforms will be IAW team policy.
8-15. DRILL MEET TRIP POLICY.
a. Cadets are expected to arrive at EHS no later than the announced formation time for the trip. Tardy cadets will owe their fellow cadets five push-ups for each minute the cadet is tardy.
b. When cadets arrive, personal equipment should be neatly placed in the classroom and cadets should prepare for formation.
c. Cadets will be formed up by team and assigned duties. Once they fall out, cadets will perform assigned tasks.
d. After all team equipment has been loaded; the cadre or Battalion Commander will authorize the loading of personal equipment.
e. Sponsors and cadre will board the bus first, followed by the cadets.
f. Upon arrival at the motel, cadets will form up while the cadre draw the room keys. Room Captains and room assignments will be made. Room Captains are responsible for their cadets at all times.
g. Keys will be handed out to the Room Captains and team equipment unloaded as necessary. After team equipment is secure, cadets may unload personal equipment.
h. A schedule will be posted allocating practice time for teams and personal time for cadets.
8-16. DRILL MEET BUS POLICY.
a. Male and female cadets may sit together provided there is no public display of affection (PDA), they are both fully awake and the seat lights are on (during hours of darkness). Blankets or similar articles will not be used when two cadets of the opposite sex are sitting together.
b. Cadets wishing to sleep should move toward the front of the bus where it's quieter, leaving the rear of the bus for those who wish to talk, sing, play games, etc. Sleeping in the same seat with a member of the opposite sex is not permitted.
c. The basic rule is: Conduct yourself as a JROTC Cadet should. Do not involve yourself in a situation which would give the impression of impropriety.
d. The entire Chain of Command as well as individual cadets are responsible for enforcing this policy.
e. Cadets violating these conditions will be moved to a seat with the SAI, AI or sponsor for the remainder of the trip. Depending on the severity of the violation, such cadets may be detailed to clean the bus; prohibited from attending the next drill meet, or other punishments in accordance with LISD policy. Failure of a cadet leader to take proper corrective action of such violations will be considered grounds for reduction in grade.
